Seeing, Touching, Holding, and Tasting Sacred Texts

This project focuses on ritualizations of scriptures that effect the senses of sight, touch, and taste, or, at least, kiss. It draws together scholars working in diverse religious traditions and different time periods to bring ethnographic description into dialouge with historical accounts of origins and change. The common factor is the role of ritual. Ritualizing the sight, sound, and touch of written texts shaped the origins of scriptures as well as their reception throughout history.
