Aziz Al-Azmeh has taught across the whole thematic range of Arab and Islamic historical studies, medieval and modern, at the American University of Beirut, Kuwait University, the University of Exeter and, since 2002, at the Central European University in Budapest. He was Visiting Professor at Yale University, Columbia University, the University of California (Berkeley), and Georgetown University. He was fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin, the Swedish Institute for Advanced Studies and the Kollegium Budapest. Aziz Al-Azmeh was Directeur de Recherches Associe, Maison des Sciences de l’Homme, Paris. He has served on the editorial boards of several academic journals.

During his Fellowship in Bochum he will be working on a project entitled ‘Freethinking in Arab and Islamic History’, which will provide a connected interpretative narrative of the phenomena of religious scepticism and disbelief in medieval and modern Arab culture.
