Job Offer: Research Associate "Jewish-Christian relations in the Persianate world" (JewsEast)
The encounters and interactions between Jews and Christians in the Middle East, Ethiopia, India and the Caucasus, which have hitherto been only insufficiently researched, is the subject matter of the project “Jews and Christians in the East: Strategies of Interaction between the Mediterranean and the Indian Ocean” (JewsEast). One of the main premises of JewsEast is that in order to obtain a truly accurate understanding of the dynamics of Jewish-Christian relations in the non-Latin world during the Middle Ages and early modern period, these various regions and traditions must be studied together because they were all profoundly interconnected through the exchange and translation of texts, artistic motifs and techniques, and other goods, via long-distance trade along the “silk road”, the Mediterranean, and the Indian Ocean, which, of course, also entailed the movement and encounter of peoples, Jews and Christians among them.
JewsEast invites applications for the position of a Research Associate to do research on Jewish-Christian relations in the Persianate world from 600-1800. The researcher is expected to identify relevant sources, contribute to and recruit contributors to the three-volume source history (see: https://www.jewseast.org/jcrmio for more information), teach in the JewsEast summer school in 2019, and engage in their own original research and publications on Jewish-Christian relations in the Persianate world.
- MA degree in a related discipline (PhD preferred)
- excellent command of Judeo-Persian and Persian
- a publication record relevant to the JewsEast project
- a profound knowledge of English
In addition, the following qualifications are desirable:
- knowledge of and ability to work with sources in Arabic and Judeo-Arabic from the Cairo or Afghan Geniza especially, and/or other relevant languages such as Armenian, Georgian, Syriac or Hebrew
The position is planned to commence at the earliest date possible and will end on 30 September 2020. Since this position is funded entirely by third-party funds, there are no teaching obligations. The employment is in accordance to the Public Sector Collective Agreement on Länder (TV-L). The wage classification will be carried out after presenting the personal requirements as pay grade TV-L E 13 (75 %).
