Hybrid Talk with Jan-Ulrich Sobisch at the University of Bonn

On Tuesday, June 13, 2023, Jan-Ulrich Sobisch will give a talk at the University of Bonn entitled "Digitized Tibetan Metaphors: Tracing the Formation and Development of Religious Ideas" from 18:15 - 19:45. The event is a hybrid format and can therefore be attended on-site in Lecture Hall IV in the main building, as well as online.

Registration is required for online participation. To do so, please email Antonia Kranz in advance at kranzant@uni-bonn.de.

Abstract:

"The presentation discusses some aspects of the role of metaphors in religious language and the study of metaphors in religious texts. It shows that religious metaphors are not only useful for expressing concepts that are difficult to articulate directly, but they also provide a way to make complex ideas accessible and memorable. It argues that research efforts to explore and analyze these metaphors, including the use of digital tools and interdisciplinary approaches, are not only a significant contribution to the study of the history of ideas, but have the potential to change the reception of Buddhism among accademics and in the Western world."
