«Die materielle Dimension von Kultur- und Religionskontakt am Beispiel der missionsgeschichtlichen Sammlung der Weißen Väter»

Abstract:

The presentation deals with the question of material objects having the capacity to become a source for studying cultural and religious contact. The focus is on material objects that are part of missionary collections. These collections are a corollary of intensified missionary activities of Christian orders and congregations starting around the middle of the 19th century. At present, their number is rapidly decreasing. Against this background, the missionary collection of the so-called White Fathers congregation, which was handed over to CERES in 2021 and will serve as a case example, is a stroke of luck. My first presentation on the topic will focus on a brief introduction to missionary collections, especially of the collection of the White Fathers kept at CERES, the capacity of objects and missionary collections, in general, to contribute to the study of religious contact, the planned methodological approach as well as a summary of the status quo.
The presentation will be held in German.
