CERES Computer Café: Writing Academic Texts with Markdown
CERES Palais, room "Lalibela" (3.11)
Word-processor formats like DOCX are a frequent source of problems because they focus on formatting instead of structured content. Formats like LaTeX, on the other hand, produce better results, but are difficult to learn. Markdown is a simple, plain-text format that allows to create academic documents including footnotes and automatically formatted bibliographic references which can be converted into various formats including DOCX, high-quality PDF, and HTML. The online journal Entangled Religions now uses Markdown to format all incoming submissions and create the final PDF and HTML versions.
Simple examples show how Markdown can be used to write academic texts as well as notes and presentations.
