Workshop on Methods: Writing with Markdown - An Introduction

CERES-Palais, Raum "Ruhrpott" (4.13)

WORKSHOP "Writing with Markdown: An Introduction for Early Career Researchers"
A dissertation with a few hundred pages and even more footnotes can make Microsoft Word a nightmare to work with. But what are the alternatives? Learn LaTeX in addition to everything else? Or just embrace the chaos?

This workshop will introduce Early Career Researchers to writing with Markdown. Markdown is a lightweight formatting language that offers a simple and intuitive way to write text. And even if you do not plan to ditch your familiar word processor at this stage of the writing process, Markdown is used in various contexts and useful to know about: from casual communication (Element chats support simple text formatting using Markdown) to personal note-taking (many note-taking and knowledge organization programs or wikis support Markdown) and rigorous academic writing (the Metaphor Papers are all typeset using Markdown).

Participants will begin by learning the basics of Markdown syntax, including how to create headings, lists, links, images, and more. We will explore how Markdown can be used in everyday scenarios, such as formatting text chat messages or TRAM tickets. The workshop will then delve into more advanced uses, such as note-taking, creating presentation slides, and even write entire dissertations. Examples will include generating footnotes, and bibliographies, and converting Markdown documents to various formats (PDF, DOCX, etc.).
