Lunchbox Lecture: “Planets as Metaphors and Symbols in Chinese Buddhism”

CERES-Palais, Raum "Ruhrpott" (4.13)

Lunchbox Lecture by Dr. Jeffrey Kotyk, University of Bologna

The planets as visible lights in the sky were only part of their conception in China. Buddhists also assigned symbolic functions to them, equating them to aspects of awakening (bodhi) and the path of wisdom. This presentation will discuss the varying aspects of the planets in Chinese Buddhism, from stars to days of the week to symbols of enlightenment.
