Paolo Santangelo studied Islamic Law and Indonesian Culture at La Sapienza University of Rome. Post-Gradual, he specialized in Chinese Language and Culture at the Italian Institute for the Middle and Far East (ISMEO) in Rome. He joined in the Oriental University of Naples in 1974, first as a researcher and lecturer, later as an Associate and finally Full Professor for the History of China (until 2007). From 2007 to 2013, he was a Full Professor for East Asian History in La Sapienza University of Rome.

Paolo Santangelo specialized in the social, intellectual and anthropological history of Ming-Qing China as well as private history and psychological trends. He also leads an international research project on the textual analysis of literary and non-literary sources in Chinese culture in order to collect and evaluate expressions concerning emotions and states of mind. He is the author of several essays on the social history of pre-modern China (e.g. “The Imperial Factories of Suzhou: Limits and Characteristics of State Intervention during the Ming and Qing Dynasties” and “Urban Society in Late Imperial Suzhou”). Since the 8oties, however, he is also working on the history of mentality (e.g. Sentimental Education in Chinese History. An Interdisciplinary Textual Research in Ming and Qing Sources, Leiden 2003).

As a KHK Visiting Research Fellow he is going to work on a project entitled Meanings and Symbology of the Sense of Smell in some Zhiguai Texts.
