KHK Visiting Research Fellow 2015, Department of Languages and Cultures of the Near East, Heidelberg University, Heidelberg, Germany

Ines Weinrich received her Master and Ph.D. in Arabic Studies at the University of Bamberg and visited the Graduate School for Contemporary Oriental Studies at the Universities of Erlangen-Nürnberg and Bamberg. After her Ph.D. in 2002, she was a Research Associate (“Wissenschaftliche Assistentin”) of Arabic Studies at the University of Bamberg (until 2008). From 2008 to 2013, she was a Research Associate within the Orient-Institut Beirut of the Max-Weber Foundation in Lebanon, followed by her assignment as a Researcher within the Department of Language and Culture of the Near East at the University of Heidelberg (2013-2014). Before joining the Käte Hamburger Kolleg, she was a Guest Professor for Islamic Studies at the University of Heidelberg.

Ines’ research interests focus on the al-inšād ad-dīnī (religious chanting within Islamic religious rituals), as well as Arabic literature and entertainment (especially performative and media aspects, such as poetry, folk literature and theatre), Islamic rituals (especially aesthetic and auditory dimensions), dynamics within written and oral transformations and cultural transformations in the Arabic world in the 19th and early 20th century. Next to numerous editorships and articles, she is the author of Fayrūz und die Brüder Rabānī. Musik, Moderne und Nation im Libanon (Würzburg: Ergon 2006). Her monograph al-inšad ad-dīnī in der islamischen religiösen Praxis is currently in preparation.

As a KHK Visiting Research Fellow, she is going to work on a project entitled “The Dimensions of Sound in Islam – Travelling Aesthetics”.
