Doing a PhD step by step
In the following, the application process and doing a doctorate is outlined step by step.
Step 1: Admission Requirements & Application
In order to enroll in CERES PhD programme all applicants must hold a graduate degree (Master of Arts or similar) in a respective field. The PhD programme focuses on research and no further coursework is required. All applicants must select a doctoral adviser from CERES, who will supervise the development of the PhD project and eventually evaluate the PhD thesis.
No tuition and fees are demanded by CERES for the PhD programme. However, personal costs must be covered by the PhD student. Please note: CERES does not provide regular funding for PhD studies. Candidates should inquire about funding opportunities (e.g. RUB Research School, DAAD, or other).
Step 2: Visa, Enrolment & Supervision
Visa requirement: Every admitted PhD applicant is responsible to acquire a student visa if required by the Federal Republic of Germany. Upon admission, the website of the Auswärtiges Amt (Germany's Federal Foreign Office) can provide some general information on visa regulations and more specific ones on how to obtain a student visa.
In order to start their PhD project, successful applicants must enrol at Ruhr-Universität Bochum. For the enrolment process, PhD students need a confirmation from the Faculty of Philology at Ruhr-Universität Bochum to be registered as PhD candidate. Please fill in the online form here. Further documents required for being registered at the Faculty are listed in the promotion regulations (German: Promotionsordnung) and include:
- graduation certificate (obligatory)
