Doing a PhD step by step

In the following, the application process and doing a doctorate is outlined step by step.

Step 1: Admission Requirements & Application

In order to enroll in CERES PhD programme all applicants must hold a graduate degree (Master of Arts or similar) in a respective field. The PhD programme focuses on research and no further coursework is required. All applicants must select a doctoral adviser from CERES, who will supervise the development of the PhD project and eventually evaluate the PhD thesis.

No tuition and fees are demanded by CERES for the PhD programme. However, personal costs must be covered by the PhD student. Please note: CERES does not provide regular funding for PhD studies. Candidates should inquire about funding opportunities (e.g. RUB Research School, DAAD, or other).

Step 2: Visa, Enrolment & Supervision

Visa requirement: Every admitted PhD applicant is responsible to acquire a student visa if required by the Federal Republic of Germany. Upon admission, the website of the Auswärtiges Amt (Germany's Federal Foreign Office) can provide some general information on visa regulations and more specific ones on how to obtain a student visa.

In order to start their PhD project, successful applicants must enrol at Ruhr-Universität Bochum. For the enrolment process, PhD students need a confirmation from the Faculty of Philology at Ruhr-Universität Bochum to be registered as PhD candidate. Please fill in the online form here (41.2 KB) . Step 3: During the PhD Project

Good scientific practise

The Ruhr-Universität Bochum has enacted guidelines for good scientific practise and procedures concerning scientific misconduct. All PhD students undertake these guidelines (155.6 KB) (in German only) while studying in CERES PhD programme.

CERES young researchers development

CERES offers young researchers such as PhD students to be actively engaged in current research projects and their activities.

Step 4: Submission of PhD Thesis, Evaluation & Thesis Defense

After completing the text of the PhD thesis, candidates must apply for evaluation (also see § 8 of the promotion regulations (101.7 KB) , in German only). The following forms are required: The style sheet ( Mustertitelblatt (3.2 KB) ) provides information on how to design the titel page. Furthermore, the affidativ (in German only) must be included as last page of the PhD thesis.

The PhD evaluation will be completed by a public thesis defense of the candidate.
