DESCRIPTION:Response and commentary \nby Alex Cuffel (CERES) to the paneli
sts of panel Equilibrium - Violence - Entanglement: Interaction between mi
nority and majority religious communities in the Middle Ages\nPanel Chair:
Dorothea Weltecke (former KHK research fellow)\nReligious affiliation and
identity has to be repeatedly negotiated\, defined\, and chosen. The exte
rnal borders of religions are repeatedly redetermined and penetrated.. Fre
quently\, quantitativerelationships between religious groups are incongrue
nt with prevailing power relationships. Followers of dominant religions co
ntinueto quite often be numerically inferior so that nondominant religious
communitieshave had to take on subordinate positions. This process has di
rect consequences for\, on the one hand\, social\, economic\, and cultural
development and\, on the other hand\, the development of religious doctri
nes and convictions themselves. Notrarely\, and across a broad societal sp
ectrum\, religious minorities have seen themselves subjected to persecutio
n\, violence\, or exclusion. Models explaining religious violence need the
oretical and methodological refinement. This panel will deal with these as
pects of interaction between majority and minority religious communities b
y selecting case studies from diverse cultural milieus ranging from mediev
 al Anatolia to South Asia.\n(Panel 25-106 | 122)
