DESCRIPTION:Vortrag von Neda Mohtashami: A Primordial or an Infite Hell? T
he Case of a Young Avestan Metaphor\n\nHybride Veranstaltung\n\nEschatolog
ical ideas in Zoroastrianism are not evenly spread over the three millenni
a of its emergence and evolution. While later Middle Persian literature ev
idences a fully developed picture of both individual and collective eschat
ologies\, the journey of the soul after death receives comparatively littl
e treatment in the Young Avestan corpus and a minimum\, if any\, in the ol
dest layer of Zoroastrian literature\, the Gathas. This presentation aims
to discuss some of the issues confronting Avestan scholarship regarding th
e question of eschatology and its development. For this purpose\, the Youn
g Avestan adjectival phrase anaγra- təmah-\, lit. ‘beginningless darkn
ess’ is chosen as case study. It will be shown how the problem of transl
ation imposes confusion in the determination of the target domain\, and th
e extent to which our understanding of the possible connotation of this te
rm is influenced by the limited occurrences of the concept of darkness (t
əmah-) in the Old and Young Avesta.\n\n
