DESCRIPTION:Guest Lecture by Dr. Lucien van Beek (Leiden University)\n\nCo
nceptual Metaphors and the Origins of Juridical Terminology\n\nWhat is the
conceptual relation between straightness and justice? In which ways can c
rimes be conceptualized? In my presentation\, I will study material from a
ncient juridical texts and vocabulary to shed light on these and similar q
uestions. I will illustrate how insights from Conceptual Metaphor Theory\,
in combination with lexical and etymological analysis\, may help us under
stand how early juridical thought developed in the (pre)history of Indo-Eu
ropean languages\, and how vocabulary in this domain was coined.
