Panel des CERES-Forschungsprojekts Iconic Religion: How Imagineries of Rel
igious Encounter Structure Urban Space\nIn the second of two sessions we
will continue to consider to what extent such icons\, in the form of sacr
ed buildings and sites\, clothing\, public events etc\, generate social i
maginaries about different religions and their co-existence. The semiotic
contribution of Peirce will be examined in relation to the attribution a
nd generation of the ‘iconicity’ of religious objects. This will be f
ollowed by papers which investigate the geography\, visibility and contes
tation of religious icons in diverse urban public spaces\, and the discour
ses\, representations and encounters they generate.\nMit:\n\nVolkhard Krec
h (CERES): Iconic religion: Reflections on a monistic approach to religiou
s phenomena\nHew Wai Weng: Sights and sites of inclusive Islam: Chinese-st
yle mosques in urban Malaysia and Indonesia\nChristopher Cotter: Seeing a
