DESCRIPTION:Embedding Religions: Converting Figures and Conversion Stories
\nPanelleitung: Carmen Meinert (CERES)\nThe panel presents the ongoing wor
k of the interdisciplinary group “Buddhism in Motion” on conversion na
rratives. Stories about the conversion of communities are understood as an
alytical instruments to investigate ways of ‘making sense’ of the intr
oduction of a religion in a specific region. The objective of the papers p
resented at this panel is twofold: an investigation of the object-language
level and one of the meta-language level.\nFirstly\, papers aim at charac
terising the dialectics of conversion accounts with respect to:\n\nagent(
 s) of conversion and the strategies implemented\, \njustification of the
propagation of the religious faith\, \ndescription of the converted othe
r and \nrepercussions of the conversion. \n\nAs narrated reconstructions
of the past\, conversion stories are not merely an expression of the agen
da of a religious community but also of dynamics which go beyond the reli
gious field. It is these underlying strings that the group seeks to unrav
el as a second step.\nMit: Stephen Eskildsen (ehem. KHK fellow)\, Lisa Wev
elsiep (CERES)\, Robert Mayer (ehem. KHK fellow) & Licia di Giaconti (KHK)
